Practice - stained glass windows

When i was looking back at the photos from the church i was really drawn to the stained glass windows. I started thinking of how i could manipulate them not so they were unrecognisable but so that their prestigious quality had been taken away.
I stretched photos of them and this gave me a result that i was really pleased with.  you can only just make out what the images are when looking at the closely but from a far they look nothing like stained glass windows.
By manipulating them this way i have achieved lessening their meaning but not completely removing it, as it is still partially recognisable.

I chose to place 4 in a hashtag shape so i could intertwine them together instead of lining them up like they would be in the church.

Although this experiment was successful i would like to take it further by manipulating other objects from the church in the same way and possibly making a mini series of them.

After manipulating photos of the actual stained glass windows i started thinking about how i could use their shape. Collage has always been a really good starting point for me because it enables me to produce work quickly so i can focus on where i want to go in a project.
i decided i wanted to use just the frame shape from the windows and create collages of the objects found in the church inside. i wanted to achieve what the previous collage had by taking away the objects significance so i cut the images up so they were skewed views.

Some of the items, the bible for example, you are still able to recognise but others like the brass eagle stand you can not.
There is a nice contrast between the significant shape of the individual collages (the windows) and the items within that have had their significance lessened due to being cut up and re-arranged.

when i was talking to Nick and explaining what i was planning on doing/achieving with this project of taking away objects significance, he suggested i look at what makes the object significant; colour, material, shape, etc. i think this is a really good idea and will explore this with other collages.
