Abstract expressionism

Sunday 2nd April 2017
Abstract expressionism.

“Abstract expressionism is the term applied to new forms of abstract art developed by American painters such as Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Willem de Kooning in the 1940s and 1950s. It is often characterised by gestural brush-strokes or mark-making, and the impression of spontaneity” – Tate website.

The paintings in this movement are bold are expressive and I like the vivid colours, as well as the subtle. The paintings will still often include geometric shapes and bold lines like in de Kooning’s works.

This movement is important to be because the artists were trying to evoke the viewer’s feelings and trying to get them to think. Within my work I am attempting to make the viewer look and re-asses what the work it and what it may resemble.
