Yayoi Kusama

Thursday 13th April
Yayoi Kusama

“Since 1977 Kusama has lived voluntarily in a psychiatric institution, and much of her work has been marked with obsessiveness and a desire to escape from psychological trauma.” – Tate website

Kusama started to paint using polka dots and nets as motifs at around age ten ,and created fantastic paintings in watercolors, pastels and oils but is best known for her work with polka dots.
I am attracted toYayoi Kusama’s work because of how she uses shapes (specifically polka dots) within her work to create the landscape. She uses mirrors and polka dots to create scenes where the pattern is seen to be endless.
I want to create pieces that have the same lines running throughout so that I can create the effect of the pattern being endless like Kusama has achieved.

Our earth is only one polka dot among a million stars in the cosmos. Polka dots are a way to infinity.
